A critical work regarding William Shakespeare, with reference to his life, his work, and the political and religious conditions of England at the time. This was a highly acclaimed and influential work among literary critics after it's publication, and remains the most important and praised work by George Brandes. George Morris Cohen Brandes was a renowned Danish critic and scholar whose work greatly influenced the literature of Scandinavia and Europe. Translated by William Archer, Mary Morrison and Diana White, from the original Danish. Each volume is complete with the half title page. With a bookplate for one, 'Peter M. Scott', to the front paste-downs of both volumes. In quarter morocco binding. Externally, excellent with minor shelf wear. Bookplate to the front paste-downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age-toned but otherwise very bright and clean with just a few scattered spots towards the front of the books. Closed tear to page thirteen of volume one. The odd light handling mark throughout. Some loss to the top of page 401 in volume two, and to the edge of page 427, however this does not affect the text. Fine . Ill.: None. Fine .
