Description: Paris, L'Auteur; Mme Porthmann, 1835-1836. First edition. Leather. Three very scarce first editions of medical publications regarding pregnancy and birth from Louis-Auguste Baudelocque, in a sumptuous signed binding and presentation case from Rene Simier. The very scarce first editions of two works from 'childbirth professional' Louis Auguste Baudelocque's.The first work present is his 1835 guide to the benefits of using compressions, exercised through the anterior wall of the belly, to suspend blood loss in women, following injuries to the lower part of the body during childbirth.Bound just before the main body of this first work is the very scarce publication of Baudelocque's letter to the members of the academy of sciences regarding his method, published a year later, in 1836.The final work present is Baudelocque's account of the history of cephalotripsy, the practice of crushing the head of a foeutus in order to effect a safe delivery. The author provides an account of fifteen such operations, performed by various medical practitioners. In a straight grain morocco Rene Simier signed binding, housed in a matching morocco presentation box. Simier was a major nineteenth century French binders, and the Simier label - 'binder of the king' - appears to the verso of the front free endpaper, and the Simier blind stamp to the recto of the rear free endpaper. Simier acquired notoriety through becoming the binder of the Empress Marie-Louise and following the Restoration, binder of the king. His name also appears in gilt to the tail of the presentation box back strip, reading Simier R. Du Roi. With the red morocco and gilt detailing of the presentation box correspond to the binding of Baudelocque's work, the back strip title actually reads 'Chemin de Fer de Paris a Rouen', indicating that the box was not initially intended to house this volume. With a library stamp to the title page of the 1836 letter, and no further library markings. In a straight grain morocco signed binding with gilt detailing, housed in a full morocco presentation box. Externally striking, with just a touch of light rubbing to the tail of the front joint. Binder's label to head of verso of front free endpaper, and with their blind stamp to the recto of the rear free endpaper. Bumping to box perimeters, with tail piece detached to one joint. Loosely inserted is a paper covered board, in an imitation straight grain morocco. Internally, firmly bound. Library stamp to first leaf, with instances of spotting throughout. Very Good .
