J.O.P Bland; E. Backhouse - China Under the Empress Dowager

Title: China Under the Empress Dowager
Description: London, William Heinemann, 1910. First edition. Cloth. A very smart, first edition copy of this illustrated historical work on the 19th century noblewoman and concubine, the Empress Dowarger Tzu Hsi of China. An incredibly fascinating work on the Empress Dowager Tzu Hsi of China, a nineteenth century Chinese noblewoman and concubine and later regent who was instrumental in the operation of the Chinese government during the late Qing Dynasty from 1861 until 1908. Tzu Hsi was selected as a concubine of the Xianfeng Emperor during her early adolescence, during which she gave birth to a son, Zaichun, who would succeed his father as Emperor upon his father's death. This allowed Tzu Hsi to assume the role of co-Empress Dowager along her son and along with the previous Emperor's widow. This work has been compiled from state papers and the private diary of the Comptroller of Her Household, and has been edited by J.O.P. Bland and E. Backhouse. The first edition of this work. Containing a double-paged map of Peking, a frontispiece portrait of Tzu Hsi, and a further twenty-nine illustrated plates.Collated and complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, lovely, with just a small amount of bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, binding is slightly tender to the head of the front hinge at the title page, remaining binding is generally firm. The odd spot to the pages, which are otherwise bright and clean. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good Indeed .
