Finden and Sir Joshua Reynolds. This is a wonderful set of James Bowell's biographical work on his friend and contemporary Samuel Johnson, which is commonly said to be 'the greatest biography written in the English language&apos. Johnson has been revered by some as being the only true great critic of English literature of his time. His best known work was his influential 'A Dictionary of the English Language', which had a far-reaching effect on the Modern English language. That dictionary remained the standard for one-hundred and fifty years, when the 'Oxford English Dictionary' was published.First published in 1791, 'The Life of Samuel Johnson' includes biographical information on Johnson as well as direct conversations that Boswell noted down at the time, which 'paint a vivid portrait of the complete man&apos. Vol I includes introductory remarks by Alexander Napier, as well as biographical events from September 1709 to 1763.Vol II includes biographical information on Johnson's life from 1764 to 1775.Vol III includes biographical information from 1776 to 1780, as well as one illustrated folding plate.Vol IV includes biographical information from 1781 to 1784, when Johnson died. Vol V includes information on Johnson's Tour of the Hebrides in 1773, with a folding map of the Hebrides serving as the frontispiece. The final volume is titled 'Johnsoniana: Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson', and includes anecdotes from a range of sources like Hesther Lynch Piozzi and Richard Cumberland, as well as 'The Diary of Dr. Campbell' and extracts from Madame D'Arblay's diary. This edition was collected and edited by Robina Napier. With illustrated bookplates to the front paste down of each volume belonging to Henry Wemyss Feilden (1838-1921). Feilden was a British Army officer, as well as an Arctic explorer and naturalist. He served as naturalist on Sir George Nares' British Arctic Expedition of 1875-76, and was also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Collated, complete. Bound in a contemporary half-calf binding on marbled boards. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing and wear to the extremities and the spine. Spines are lightly faded. Mark to rear board of 'Johnsoniana' with fading to the top edge of front board. Illustrated book plate to front paste downs of all volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot to the margins of text, which increases to foxing to the first and last few pages, particularly to Vol IV. Offsetting to title pages from frontispieces.
