A first edition set containing all ten volumes of Baker's 'The History of the English Novel', which were published between 1924 and 1939. First Edition. Scarce complete ten volume set, in the original cloth binding. This is an informative literary history of the English novel, which begins with early Anglo-Saxon fiction and ends with the likes of Kipling, Conrad, and D. H. Lawrence. The author intended the work as 'an attempt to trace the origins and growth of English prose fiction in the ages before the Tudor period', as well as later movements. Vol I is titled, 'The Age of Romance; from the Beginnings to the Renaissance&apos. Vol II is titled 'The Elizabethan Age and After&apos.Vol III is titled 'The Later Romances and the Establishment of Realism&apos. Vol IV is titled 'Intellectual Realism: from Richardson to Sterne&apos.Vol V is titled 'The Novel of Sentiment and the Gothic Romance&apos. Vol VI is titled 'Edgeworth, Austen, Scott&apos. Vol VII is titled 'The Age of Dickens and Thackeray&apos.Vol VIII is titled 'From the Brontes to Meredith: Romanticism in the English Novel&apos. Vol IX is titled 'The Day before Yesterday&apos.Vol X is titled 'Yesterday&apos. Written by Ernest A. Baker (1869-1941), who was an author and editor of fiction as well as dictionaries. As well as 'The History of the English Novel', Baker also wrote 'A Guide to Historical Fiction' (1914). With institutional labels belonging to Royal Leamington Spa Public Library, as well as Birmingham Public Libraries on front paste down and endpapers.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Minimal edge wear to the extremities with light bumping to the head and tail of spine. Fading and discolouration to spine, with a few marks. Institutional numbers written on the spine of all volumes. More noticeable marks to the front board of Vol IV.Institutional labels to front paste down and endpapers, with the occasional stamp, particularly to the front and reverse of title page.
