Second Edition. This is the second volume of this two-volume work, bound in half-calf on marbled boards.Illustrations include a range of in-text illustration, from various sources including Jussieu, Mirbel, Payer, and St. Hilaire, as well as an illustrated plate of 'Humboldt's Distribution of Plants' to rear. This is the second part of the botanical textbook by Balfour, which was first published in 1852.This volume contains Part II to Part V and the appendix of this botanical work, with contents including 'Physiological Botany', 'Taxological Botany, or Classification of Plants', 'Geographical Botany', and 'Paleontological Botany&apos. The work concludes with an appendix for directions when collecting and preserving botanical specimens, as well as a glossary.John Hutton Balfour (1808-1884) was a Scottish botanist, who was the professor of botany at both the University of Glasgow as well as the University of Edinburgh. He became the 7th Regius Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, as well as Her Majesty's Botanist, in 1845.With an illustrated bookplate belonging to H. Armytage Moore, Rowallane. He was the brother of Charles Armytage-Moore, the founding partner of London stockbrokers Buckmaster & Moore. He also inherited the garden at Rowallane, in the County Down within Northern Ireland, and helped to develop them into the famous Rowallane Gardens. Bound in half-calf on marbled boards. Externally, smart. A few marks to boards, with light rubbing to extremities, head and tail of spine, and along the raised bands of joints. Prior owner's illustrated bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout, with light age-toning to margins and the odd spot particularly to the first and last few pages.
