The first edition of this selection of issues from the literary magazine Adam International Review. Founded in 1941 by editor Miron Grindea and running for over fifty years, it is said to be the "world's longest literary magazine." It ceased publication in 1995. ADAM was an acronym for Arts Drama Architecture and Music. Some of the eminent contributors included were T S Eliot, George D Painter, Stephen Spender. Many contributed for free, often George Bernard Shaw, W H Auden, Winston Churchill, and Samuel Beckett, and at times featuring Picasso and Chagall. The issued included in this collection areNo. 260: Marcel Proust - A World Symposium, being the 1957 issue celebrating the twenty fifth anniversary of the company. This number focuses on French author Marcel Proust, with contributions by Jean Cocteau, Andrew Spire, Violet Schiff, and Anthony Pugh among others. Some of the essays are in French; Nos. 289-290: La Suisse Vue par les Anglais, the 1961 issue. A number focused on Switzerland as seen by the British people. With contributions by T. S. Eliot, Benjamin Britten, John Evelyn, G S Fraser. Some pieces in French and Italian are included, such as a translation of an extract from Charles Dickens' Little Dorrit; Nos. 331-333: Baudelaire Berlioz, 1969 issue. On French poet Charles Baudelaire and French Romantic composer Hector Berlioz. With writings by W T Brandy, Hugh MacDonald, Michael Wright, Bernard N. Schilling, and others; Nos. 337-339: Four Writers and Music: Bernard Shaw, André Gide, Samuel Beckett, David Gascoyne, the 1970 issue. Containing pieces on these four writers and music. Contributors to the issue include David Gascoyne, Cyril Connolly, Raymond Johnson, and others.All in the original publisher's wraps with illustrations in text. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally very smart with some shelf wear and chipping, particularly to the 260 issue, which has suffered a minor loss tot he tail of the spine and a minor closed tear to the front wrap. No. 331-333 was inscribed by a previous owner to the opening leaf. Internally, firmly bund. The pages are clean with only a touch of age toning, as usual. Illustrated in text throughout. Very Good .
