They were originally developed to compete with penny dreadfuls, marketed with their brightly coloured covers and popular and entertaining novels, often including sensational fiction. Routledge were one of the first publishers to being marketing yellowbacks with their 'Railway Library', this novel being included in this railway series. In the original publisher's pictorial paper covered boards. Externally, sound, with some bumping to the spine and extremities, a little loss to the spine. Light marks and rubbing to the boards and spine. Webbing exposed to the joints. Boards are a little bowed. Faint tidemark to the rear board and spine. Front hinge is a little strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some odd spots. Faint tidemark to the textblock. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
