With illustrations throughout, and a two page map of Scotland and the Hebrides.This is a biography of Samuel Johnson, English writer, moralist and critic, abridged from James Boswell's two works,  'The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides', 1786, and 'The Life of Samuel Johnson', 1791. Boswell is best known for the latter work, which is commonly held as the best biography written in the English language.This 1930 edition is the first to feature numerous illustrations from beloved artist Ernest Howard Shepherd, known especially for his illustrations of the anthropomorphic characters of children's literature classics, 'Winnie-the-Pooh' and 'The Wind in the Willows&apos. Shephard did, however come to resent 'that silly old bear', feeling the Pooh illustrations overshadowed his other work.Featuring the binders stamp of Hatchards, Piccadilly, famed for being the oldest bookseller in England and official bookseller to the royal household. In a half crushed morocco binding, with raised bands and gilt detailing. Externally, fine. Some spotting to fore edge. Binder's stamp to verso of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
