Margaret Barton - Tunbridge Wells

Title: Tunbridge Wells
Description: London, Faber and Faber , 1937. First edition. Cloth. A very smart first edition of this excellent illustrated work on the town of Tunbridge Wells by Margaret Barton. The first 1937 edition of this historical work by Margaret Barton. An excellent volume defined by the author as a "biography of a town" which has played an important part in English social life for centuries. Margaret's vivid writing brings the stories of the private lives of public people to life, and throws new illumination upon social history of the seventeenth and eighteenth century. A well documented book, starting from the discovery of the medicinal waters trickling through Lord Bergavenny's deer-forest, and developing decade by decade from a camping site to a hamlet of cottages, and eventually to a town of brick and stone. A fascinating account of the history of Tunbridge Wells. Illustrated with sixteen lovely full plates and a folding map of Tunbridge Wells to the rear. With the unclipped dust wrapper. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally excellent with only minor shelf wear and a slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. With a minor damp marking to the top right corner of the front board. The dust wrapper is excellent and unclipped with minor shelf wear and some sunning to the spine, with a very minor mark to the rear wrap and spine. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the fore edge, affecting only the gutter of the folding map to the rear. Otherwise, the pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with sixteen lovely full plates and a folding map of Tunbridge Wells to the rear. With the unclipped dust wrapper.  Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good Indeed/Very Good.
