The first UK edition, published simultaneously as the US edition, priority is unknown. A work of fiction by R. M. Ballantyne, following the story of Miles Milton as he joins the British army for the war in the Soudan and learns his youthful mistakes the hard way. Illustrated with an illustrated title page and five plates. Collated, complete.  in the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Neatly inscribed by a previous owner to the verso of the front free endpaper, dated 1888. Internally, the binding is generally firm throughout with the preface and first two leaves of contents loose but present. The pages are bright and clean with a minor odd spotting to the occasional leaf. With an illustrated title page and five illustrations. With an error in binding with the plate 'Gallant Rescue' as frontispiece instead of page 217. Very Good . Ill.: Unnamed. Very Good .
