A lovely collection of verses by Thomas Gray, privately printed for leavers of Eton College and presented in a vellum binding. Thomas Gray (1716-1771) was an English poet and letter-writer. Often considered to be a pre-Romantic poet, Gray declined the offer of Poet Laureate in 1757. His most famous poem 'An Elegy Written in a Country Courtyard' was first published in 1751 and popularised by Horace Walpole. Its reflectiveness and stoicism saw it immediately highly regarded and popular, with it having been translated into Latin and Greek, as well as pirated. The work considers the afterlife and death, foreshadowing the Gothic movement. Many phrases entered popular use as a result of Gray's coinage, amongst them 'kindred spirit', 'Far from the Madding Crowd' (later the title of a Thomas Hardy novel), 'celestial fire' and 'The Paths of Glory&apos.Bound in full vellum, and printed for Eton College. Presented to Robert Adrian Roberts on his leaving Eton in 1939. In a full paper vellum binding. Externally generally smart, with minor general wear to the vellum and bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good .
