Andre Laurie [Paschal Grousset] - Les Exiles de la Terre

Title: Les Exiles de la Terre
Description: Paris, D'Education et de Recreation, J Hetzel et Cie, 1888. First edition. Cloth. A scarce, first edition of this novel by a collaborator of Jules Verne. With stunning pictorial boards. Regarded as one of Grousset's most interesting science fiction novels. Bookplate to the front pastedown of Sir Campbell Clarke.  Clarke was a British journalist and author. He translated many papers for the Philological Society and adapted many plays for the English stage. This novel follows a consortium intending to exploit the Moon's mineral resources. In order to do so they decided to bring the earth closer to Earth. A mountain in Sudan composed of pure iron becomes the headquarters of the Selene Company and Solar reflectors are used to provide the energy required to convert the mountain into an electro-magnet. In the original French. Andre Laurie is a pseudonym for Jean Francois Paschal Grousset, the French politician, journalist and science fiction author. He collaborated with Jules Verne on Les Cinq Cent Millions de la Begum, L'Etoile de Sud and L'Epave du Cynthia. Some individuals believe that the original manuscripts were written by Grousset and then rewritten by Verne at the publisher's request. Grousset was discovered by the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel, and wrote many science fiction novels. His works are some of the earliest of this genre. With illustrations by George Roux. Roux is known for illustrating Verne's science fiction novels in his 'Les Voyages Extraordinaires&apos. His distinctive style complement this work, and form the beautiful cover.  In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with just some light shelfwear to the head and tail of spine. Small patch of rubbing to the front board. Bookplate to the front pastedown, Sir Campbell Clarke. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional light scattered spots to pages. Near Fine . Ill.: George Roux. Near Fine .
