The Free Church of Scotland was formed this very same year, due to a large withdrawal from the established Church of Scotland in a schism known as the 'Disruption of 1843&apos. Over 450 evangelical ministers of the church broke away over whether the church or the state is the arbiter of its clerical appointments and benefits. Comprising 'Proceedings of the General Assembly' edited by Reverend John Baillie (1843); 'Report of the Financial Committee to the General Assembly of 1843' read by Dr Chalmers; 'Proceedings of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland held at Glasgow October 17 1843' (1843); 'A Sermon Preached at the Opening of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland' by Thomas Chalmers (1843); 'Roll of Members of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland, Held at Glasgow October 1843' (1843); 'Free Church of Scotland Report of the Financial Committee to the General Assembly of 1843' Read by Dr Chalmers. John Baillie was a Church of Scotland minister, who penned numerous theological works.
