A wonderfully illustrated and highly regarded illustrated work regarding the costumes, manners and customs of Russia. A very scarce and informative work. Illustrated with thirty-nine colour plates. The signatures run as [4], **4, A4, B2, C4, D2, E4, F2, G4, H2, I4, K2, L4, M2, N4, O1, P4, Q1. A bilingual work, with title pages and text in French and German. Undated, dated from Jisc from a copy held at the National Trust Libraries. Collated, lacking the final plate (plate forty) and front and rear endpapers. French and German descriptive text for final plate is still present. The work was originally issued in eight parts, with five plates in each part, published in printed wrappers. The plates show the small trades of St Petersburg in the late eighteenth century, including sellers and auctions, peddlers, and dealers in birds, flowers, eggs, fish, fruit, cheese, toys, glasses, rabbits, prints, and more. The drawings were drawn by Geissler during his travels in St Petersburg and Southern Russia, where he travelled between 1790 and 1798. Written by Johann Gottfried Gruber, a German critic and literary historian. He was a professor at the University of Wittenberg, and also the professor of philosophy at Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. His other works include 'Charakteristik Herders', 'Geschichte des Menschlichen Geschlechts', and 'Worterbuch der Altklassischen Mythologie&apos. Illustrated by Gottfried Heinrich Geissler, a German engraver and illustrator. During his time in St Petersburg, he worked as a drawing teacher, before entering into the service of the naturalist Peter Simon Pallas in 1792, with whom he accompanied on an expedition to Southern Russia in 1793 to 1794. He is considered to be an important chronicler of the city Leipzig. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, sound. Front joint is starting but firm. Light rubbing to the boards and spine, resulting in some loss of leather. Cracks to the head and tail of the rear joint. Minor bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd mark and spot. Plate 1 with some rubbing, resulting in one of the faces being rubbed out. Plates 6, 26, and 38 with some light marks. repairs to the French title page. Repairs to tail of page 95/96. Good . Ill.: G. H. Geissler. Good .
