Description: Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1891-4. First edition. Fine Binding. A beautifully bound collection of periodicals from the nineteenth century, mostly comprising of the colour-illustrated French magazine 'Le Figaro&apos. Le Figaro was founded in 1826 as a weekly satirical, taking its name and motto from 'Le Marriage de Figaro&apos. By 1866 the newspaper became a daily newspaper and is still in print today. This set comprises of three volumes. The first volume opens with three separately paginated collections of sheet music from Le Figaro, followed by three untitled excerpts from the magazine, two of which have dates handwritten to the first leaf, '1889' and '1891&apos. Following this are the October, November and December issues of Figaro from 1891 which have continuous pagination and the original coloured wraps. These issues have the front and rear wraps. To the second volume there are fifteen sequential issues of 'Le Figaro' from October 1891 to December 1892 inclusive. These issues have the front and rear wraps. To the third volume there is an entire year of 'Le Figaro' from January 1893 to December 1893. These issues of 'Le Figaro' all contain the pictorial front wraps. This is followed by January 1894 from 'Le Figaro', with front and rear wraps, and then individual monthly excerpts from two British periodicals. These are 'The Lady's Pictorial Christmas 1895' and 'Cycling World Illustrated' from September 1896. Binder's stamp to the front pastedown of all volumes, Phillipson and Golder. Full page plates of, Joan of Arc, 'Envahissement de Domicile', 'Le Galant Jardinier', 'Les Deux Rivales', 'Le General et Le Cerf-Volant' to the first volume. 'En Route Pour La Marche' and 'Un Match' plates to the third volume are a double page spread. Contents to the May issue in the third volume is bound to the rear. The outer wrap for January 1892 brands itself as 'Numero D'Etrennes&apos. Which translates as 'New Years Gift&apos. To this volume there is also a coloured calendar for 1892 by Jean Beraud. With the original colour wraps bound in for October 1891, November 1891, December 1891, January 1892, February 1892, March 1892, April 1892, May 1892, June 1892, July 1892, August 1892, September 1892, October 1892, November 1892, December 1892. Jan - December 1893 and January 1894. There are articles on Napoleon and there are even some English language segments such as 'The Little One' by Edouard Cadol, 'The Story of a Thief' by Georges Ohnet, A charming example of this periodical, with very bright and clean pages. In uniform full morocco bindings with mounted metal plates to the boards, which are etched with the periodical title. Externally, all volumes are very smart. Patches of rubbing to the extremities and the odd marks to boards. A few small worm holes to the front board of the 1891 volume. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Closed tear to the coloured front wrap to the February 1892 issue. Where the original coloured wraps are present, they have been closely cropped to the head and tail. Small chip to the top of coloured wrap for June 1892. Pages are bright with just the odd spots to pages. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good Indeed .
