John Britton's works on prominent English churches and cathedrals, Canterbury, Oxford, Lichfield, and Wells, all illustrated throughout. A collection of John Britton's works on the history of various churches and cathedrals in England. 'Canterbury' published in 1821, illustrated with an illustrated title page, frontispiece, and twenty-four plates. Canterbury Cathedral is one of the oldest and most famous religious structures in England, founded in 57 and rebuilt in 1070 and 1077. 'Oxford' published in 1821, illustrated with a frontispiece, and ten plates. The Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford is the chapel of Christ Church of the University of England, and was original built in 1160. 'Lichfield' published in 1820, illustrated with a frontispiece, and fifteen plates. Lichfield Cathedral is the only medieval cathedral in England with three spires, and was built around 1195. 'Wells' published in 1824, illustrated with an illustrated title page, frontispiece, and twenty-two plates. Wells cathedral is a Gothic cathedral which is the seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and was built in 1176. Written by John Britton, an antiquary and author. Fighting against poverty, Britton found luck when a collection of his common songs caught the attention of a publisher, who then commissioned him to write an account of Wiltshire, 'The Beauties of Wiltshire&apos. He also wrote 'Architectural Antiquities of Normandy', 'Picturesque Antiquities of English Cities', 'History of the Palace and Houses of Parliament at Westminster', and 'Descriptive Sketches of Tunbridge Wells and the Calverley Estate&apos. Collated, complete. In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. A very little marking to the boards. A small amount of lifting of cloth to the rear board to the joint. A little light rubbing to the spine. Front hinge is starting but firm. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Stamp to the rear pastedown, 'M.W.D.N.&apos. Internally, firmly bound.
