Description: London, G. Willis, 1850. Cloth. A fascinating and copiously illustrated study of the topography of Surrey by Edward Wedlake Brayley, complete in five volumes. Edward Wedlake Brayley was an English antiquary and topographer, born in Lambeth, Surrey in 1773. Brayley is best remembered for his friendship and frequent collaboration with the English antiquary, author and editor John Britton. Britton and Brayley became joint editors of 'The Beauties of England and Wales', a series of books describing the topography and local history of England and Wales, and both men wrote numerous other topographical works. With a section on geology by the notable English obstetrician, geologist and palaeontologist Gideon Mantell. Copiously illustrated throughout with a frontispiece, numerous in text wood-engravings to each volume, and: Fifteen steel engravings to volume I, two of which are folding, and two of which are coloured. Lacking plate of 'Chapel and Hall in Ditto, Interiors&apos. 'Windlesham Church' has been bound as frontispiece. Sixteen steel engravings to volume II, one of which is folding, with 'Ruin at Virginia Water' bound as frontispiece. Nineteen steel engravings to volume III, one of which is folding, with 'The Duke of Buccleuch's Villa, Richmond' bound as frontispiece. Thirty five steel engravings to volume IV, with 'Beddington Park' bound as frontispiece. Forty one steel engravings to volume V, two of which are folding. Lacking plate of 'Wotton House&apos. 'Knowle, Near Cranley' bound as frontispiece. In a cloth binding with blind stamped borders to boards and gilt to spines. Slightly bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Faint tidemark to boards, volume II and V. Large tidemark to rear board, volume III. Faded to spine and extremity of boards, as usual with this colour. Volume I slightly cocked. Cloth to rear joint split in places to volume III. Small crack to the front joint of volume IV. Front hinge split between title page and printed dedication, and partially split to rear hinge volume I and IV. Rear hinges tender to volumes III and V. Front hinge failed with front free-endpaper to title page detached but present, volume V. Internally generally firmly bound. Page slightly age toned, with the odd spot. Light scattered spotting to first and last few pages. The odd handling mark to the occasional page. Offsetting from dedication page to verso of title page, all volumes, visible to recto. Small loss to lower fore edge, page 351 volume I. Page 291 to 294 partially detached to gutter, but relatively firm. Plate facing page 449, volume IV, detached but present, slightly age toned and chipped to edges. Plate facing page 457 and 467, volume IV partially detached to gutter. Closed tears to folding plate facing page 325, volume V. Marking to gutter of folding plate facing page 325, volume V, offset to facing page. Good . Ill.: Various. Good .
