Part of Francois Guizot's 'History of English Revolution' series, these two volumes look at Richard Cromwell and the restoration of Charles II. Richard Cromwell inherited the title of Lord Protector of England after the death of his father, Oliver Cromwell. Richard wasn't as authoritative a figure as his father, however, and he was soon put aside and resigned from the post in 1659, thus enabling the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. Charles II went on to become one of the most popular and beloved Kings of England, known as the 'Merry Monarch&apos. During his reign in 1666 was the Great Fire of London. Originally written by Francois Guizot, a French historian and prominent figure in politics, prior to the 1848 revolution. Translated into English by Andrew Scoble. Scoble was a lawyer and politician, who also worked at translated the 'History of English Revolution' series, as well as translating Mignet's 'History of Mary Queen of Scots' In the original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Mark to the tail of the front board of Volume I. A little bump to the head of the front board of Volume I. A little rubbing to the joints. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with just the very odd spot, mostly to the first and last few pages. Prior owner's ink inscription to the half-title page. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
