Boston John West, Manning & Loring, 1803. First Edition. 16mo (5.75" x 3.5"), Hard Cover, Fair. The book also contains "Civil, Ecclesiastical, Judicial and Military Lists in Massachusetts; Associations and Corporate Institutions, for literary, agricultural and charitable purposes, Catalogues of the Officers of the General Government, with its Several Departments and Establishments; the Executive Government in each State; Census of the United States, and of the Towns in Massachusetts; the Public Duties, Revenue &c., and a Variety of other interesting articles". It also incorporates an almanac. The first owner, whose name appears at the head of the title page - Thomas Davis - added notations on some of the blank pages in the almanac section regarding arrivals and departures of ships in Boston Harbor and harbors in surrounding areas. Examples include: "Ship Elize Capt Hinchley arred at the Vineyard from Canton; Schooner Gov Carver Sailed for St. Martins, Schooner Miles Standish arrived from Cathay; Schooner Miles Standish saied from Cadiz; Brig Massasoit arrived from Bayonne; Schooner Plover sailed from Plymouth for Bilbao." Marbled boards with sheep spine, 216 pages. Externally worn but boards quite bright, with a 1" x 2" portion of the marbled paper peeled off the back cover. Spine chipped, joints, split, covers still attached. Front fee endpaper has excised upper portion, probably to remove a name. Uniformly age-tanned throughout with some light scattered foxing, no noted chips or tears, light dampstain to rear free endpaper, which also has a small edge chip. A clean and solid copy despite the external wear.
