Philadelphia Blanchard and Lea, 1858. Tall 8vo (9 1/2" x 6" or 24 cm x 15 cm), Half-Leather, Good. A good copy of an important medical periodical. This volume contains the twelve monthly issues from 1858, including a serialized article "Diseases of the Alimentary Canal" by Samuel Osborne Habershon, who published his first book, Pathological and Practical Observations on Diseases of the Alimentary Canal the following year (also published by Blanchard and Lea). Twelve chapters are printed in this volume, comprising 192 pages, with illustrations. The journal itself is devoted to providing practioners with medical news from around the world. The "Clinics" section appearing at the beginning of each issue provides synopses of case studies, and "Medical News", separated into "Domestic Intelligence" and "Foreign Intelligence", provides the reader with new developments in diagnostics and treatment. Longer articles include an abstract of a clinical lecture on cirrhosis of the liver; Sketches and Illustrations of Medical Quackery; a clinical lecture on pulmonary hemorrhage, a memoir on the use of metallic sutures and ligatures in surgical wounds and operations, State of the Public Health in Great Britain; Injurious effects of Underground Kitchens; a clinical lecture on treatment of obstinate strictures of the urethra; a report on anesthesia and anesthetics, Peculiar Effects of the Fumes of Phosphorus; and Statistics on the Prevalence of Rickets at Dresden. Three quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt ruled spine with gilt lettering, 208 pages. Externally good to very good with slightly tender joints (hinges good, covers firmly attached), some shelfwear and rubbing. Pages age-browned and foxed, with foxing from light to heavy. No noted chips or tears. Some intermittent dampstaining to the top outside margin, not affecting text. A good copy of a fairly scarce medical periodical.
