FEDERAL WRITERS' PROJECT OF THE WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION - The Oregon Trail: The Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean (American Guide Series)FEDERAL WRITERS' PROJECT OF THE WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION The Oregon Trail: The Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean (American Guide Series)
New York: Hastings House, (c.1939). First Edition. Hardcover. (illustrated beige buckram; no dust jacket) [good sound attractive copy, very slight fraying at a couple of corners, minor soiling to bottom edge, one-time owner's name and address on ffep; folding color map affixed to rear pastedown, in excellent condition]. (American Guide Series) Series (B&W photographs, maps) Somewhat unusual among the American Guide series, this book is essentially one long automobile tour, which traces the route of the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri, to Astoria, Oregon -- which essentially (although a few additional "side routes" are suggested) means it follows U.S. Highway 30 all the way. In the course of narrating this tour, the book presents an enormous amount of local history and Oregon Trail lore relating to hundreds of places in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon -- including actual physical traces, still then visible, of the passage of the bound-for-Oregon travelers. Appendices: Jefferson's Instruction to Lewis; Necessary Outfits for Emigrants Traveling to Oregon, by Palmer; The United States, 1837-1860 (a chronology); Bibliography. Index.. Very Good .
