".. Harry Assu’s fishing boat was for many years depicted on Canada’s five-dollar bill. Look carefully in the background of the 'old' five-dollar bill and you'll also see another seiner, Bruce Luck, which was owned by Assu's sons. Legendary Ripple Rock is portrayed on the right. Assu took over the Cape Mudge chieftanship from his father in 1954. The Assu family is famous for guiding the Cape Mudge Band, the biggest of the four Lekwiltok bands in the Campbell River area, to prosperity and relative independence. Assu's versions of Kwagiulth Nation history have, however, drawn criticism from other native representatives in the Campbell River area. He is the son of Chief Billy Assu, renowned Lekwiltok chief. Born at Cape Mudge on Quadra Island in 1905, hereditary chief Harry Assu recalls his life and times, with the assistance of Quadra Island’s Joy Inglis, Harry Assu's earliest memory is his father's famous potlatch of 1911. But he also vividly recalls his first boat, a 12-foot cedar dugout fitted with oars. "There were so many fish in Discovery Passage then you could walk on them! " he says, "I got paid fifty cents for each salmon at the cannery at Quathiaski Cove. " A professional fisherman for over half a century, Harry Assu has traced his family and tribal history in " Assu of Cape Mudge ". Very Good.
