NY. Dodd, Mead & Company. 1938. First Edition. With matching dates of 1938 on the title and copyright pages. With "Printed in the United States of America by the Vail-Ballou Press, Inc., Binghamton, N.Y." at the bottom of the copyright page. Numerous illustrations in black and white of: marked cards of the 1840's, "The Banco Skin", and various scenes of trouble in and out of gambling houses. Signed Presentation copy to Hollywood writer Kyle Crichton. Inscribed in black ink on the top half of the free front endpaper: "This book will become the property of Kyle (Stoonk) Crichton when he has paid the sum of $2.45. Until this payment is made, title will remain with the undersigned--Herbert Asbury. Paid Oct. 10, 1944. take it away, Crichton!" Note: Asbury is the author of "Gangs of New York" which was made into the gory movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz, directed by Martin Scorsese. VG- in original woven blue cloth spine stamped in gilt which is mostly faded. With colorful pictorial paper-covered boards, depicting men and women gambling at the races, at table games, and on a riverboat (rear panel). Splendidly crisp and colorful with edgewear to the top and bottom edges. Scarce signed by fellow author Kyle Crichton.
