Laid in is an order form for other books on the Civil War written and published by Walker. "Mr. Walker's acount is not a dry recitation of cold facts and columns of statistics. He examines the political and economic impact of Hunter's raid". Grant ordered Hunter to use scorched earth tactics similar to those used later in that year during Sherman's March to the Sea; he was to move through Staunton to Charlottesville and Lynchburg, "living off the country" and destroying the Virginia Central Railroad "beyond possibility of repair for weeks." Lee was concerned enough about Hunter that he dispatched a corps under Lt. Gen. Jubal A.
