Hayes, many military leaders, politicians, and religious leaders. Sherman lived from 1820 - 1891, and was one of the most famous leaders in the American Civil War, called by some historians 'the first modern general.' Beginning with Gen. Grant's election to the presidency, in 1869, and for the next 15 years, Sherman was responsible for the U. S. Army's engagement in the Indian Wars in the western United States.
