Text in German. Offenburg (Baden), Germany: Burda Druck und Verlag. 1961. (First edition). Quarto. Glazed lettered wraps over stiff wraps with "U.S. of Jazz" map front endpapers. Front and rear panels of over wraps have a bit of edgewear. Spine has a bit of laminate bubbling. Edges are lightly tanned else near fine. Previous owner has lightly written the names of some of the musicians appearing in the photographs in pencil and has underlined a few words, also in pencil. A very nice copy of this important collaboration of pictures and words of the world of jazz by two of the key jazz journalists of the 1950's, William Claxton and Joachim Berendt. Profusely illustrated and beautifully reproduced in black and white gravure and color and designed in a style reminiscent of William Klein's classic 1950's city books, "New York" and "Rome". Text in German. Possibly the most sought after and arguably the best photographic document of the jazz scene ever published. A great book. Scarce.
