Both volumes, blue cloth/boards; gilt lettering and image. Volume I: xviii + 293 pp. with bw frontis and 25 bw illustrations. Volume 2: xiv + 468 with bw frontis and 45 bw illustrations. Both volumes have dust jackets with monochromatic illustrations. The two-volume biography of the life and art of Charles Willson Peale of the Peale family of painters. The author, Charles Coleman Sellers, was Charles Willson Peale's great-great-grandson. In addition to being a well-known American painter, Peale also was a soldier, scientist, inventor, politician and naturalist and is best remembered for his portrait paintings of leading figures of the American Revolution. Peale established one of the first museums in the US, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, in Philadelphia. The two volumes in this set were published by two different publishers, as neither publisher published both volumes together. Volume 1 published in 1939; Volume 2 published in 1947. Contents VG, clean and tight. Covers have general shelf wear. Dj for Volume I age-toned and wearing but solid. Dj for Volume 2 faded from blue to tan. Both have some chipping. Name of former owner on ffep. Both volumes signed/Volume 2 inscribed in 1950.
