Essay summarizing the origins of the collection notes that it was considered one of the most beautiful and valuable in England. Some of the marbles were derived from excavations in 1769 near the Roman site of Hadrian's Tiburtine villa, on a spot known as the Pantanello. Beautiful engravings show many of the marbles for sale, including: a basalt figure of an Egyptian; statues and reliefs of Marcus Aurelius, Hermes, Artemis, Athene, Homer; a marble throne; sepulchral monuments; and Sleeping Nymph by Canova. The essay contains a bibliography of published works which enumerate the most important works in the collection. VG-; ex-library with few labels and marks, re-binding is strong and appears to have seen little use. Inside pages clean and edges sharp.
