Title: Gene Davis Drawings
Description: New York, The Arts Publisher, Inc, 1982. Hardbound. Blue gilt embossed boards in glossy color illustrated dust jacket with mylar cover. 155 pp. Profusely illustrated with 189 bw plates. Issued in conjunction with an exhibition of 189 examples of artwork by American artist Gene Davis (1920-1985). With an introduction here by Gene Baro. "As an original member of the Washington Color School, Gene Davis is famed for his Stripe paintings, which have been shown in museums and galleries all over the world. His drawings are less well known even though he has produced a prodigious body of works on paper over the past thirty years. Influenced at first by Klee and Gorky, Davis later evolved an original style marked by whimsy, humr, and child-like playfulness. Except for one or two brief excursions, he has avoided the stripe formet in his drawings, which contrast sharply with the formal values of his paintings. VG .
