Title: Life of William Etty, R.A. (2 Volumes)
Description: London, David Bogue, 1855. Green embossed publishers cloth. Vol. 1:frontispiece portrait, xii, 367 pp. Vol. 2: viii, 343 pp. A reading set of the first edition of this uncommon biography. Topic headings sound like enticing reading: Dejection - A Capuchin Convent; A Midnight Walk; The Bevy of Fair Women; Mature Brilliancy; The Great Masters; May in Yorkshire; and much more. Former owner's name, "Mr. B.M.Oliver, 52 Upper Gower Street" (in London's Bloomsbury section) is marked inside each volume. Mr. Oliver was a member of the Arts-Union of London, as of their 1850 annual report. "The "Art Union" was a nineteenth-century institution of art patronage organized on the principle of joint association by which the revenue from small individual annual membership fees was spent (after operating costs) on contemporary art, which was then redistributed among the membership by lot." (from Nineteenth Century Art Worldwide). Good+. Both volumes show wear to the spine and hinges, though both are still tight and square. Cloth thin in a few spots, spines faded a bit. Corners show very little wear. Top half of spine cloth for volume 1 is torn off and missing .
