This is number 112.Ex libris JanKarel Gevers. As the French taxation system was causing general resentment, Louis Mandrin, when he rebelled against it and especially when he managed to defy state authority for a long time, became hugely popular. Naturally, the state in the end won. Ange Goudar, writer for money, imagined the last will that Mandrin would have written on the eve of his execution. He added 19 letters that Mandrin might have received from common people, in which are related harrowing stories of tax oppression. All express their readiness to join Mandrin’s army, and of course: firmly state that Louis XV of France is the best of Kings, who would immediately act himself if he would know about the terrible injustice his loyal subjects suffer. Goudar’s 1755 edition having become introuvable, the Paris EDHIS produced a facsimile for a select audience. (code N-44)
