Title: Brief Remarks on the Character and Composition of the Russian Army, and a Sketch of the Campaigns in Poland in the Years 1806 and 1807
Description: London, Printed by C. Roworth, Bell-Yard, Temple-Bar, 1810. First Edition. Boards. Re-bound in modern dark blue, half-buckram binding with marbled paper boards. Title in gilt on the spine. 11 ½ by 9 inches. (2), xxx, 276 pp, plus 7 fold out battle plans and a large fold out map, all partially colored. With modern endpapers at the front and rear, lacking any original blank endpapers. Original half-title present. A short account on the make-up of the Russian Army, including the Light Infantry, Imperial Guard, the Cossaques (Cossacks) and the Basquiers, among others-describing in brief their character and roles within the larger Army. Accompanying this is a lengthy account of the War of the Fourth Coalition, in which Napoleonic forces fought against forces from Russia, Sweden, Britain, Prussia, and Saxony. This chronicles individual battles and includes an appendix containing documents from the French, Russian and Prussian armies, which provide first-hand reports on various battles, as well as eventually outlining the terms of the armistice treaty. Sir Robert Wilson was a noted member of the British Army, and was expelled from Russia as a spy after the signing of the Treaty of Tilsit, which ended the War of the Fourth Coalition (Wikipedia). Wilson also served in the British Parliament. The book is in VERY GOOD condition with light fading to the buckram. Text block solid, with the half-title, title page and dedicatory page being somewhat soiled and having faint scattered staining. Otherwise very minor scattered soiling to the interior, with a few pages being a bit more toned than others. The large fold-out map has a small tear at its left center edge, with one short mis-fold. Very Good/No Jacket.
