Description: The American admiral -- infamous for his hot temper and arrogance -- headed the team that adapted nuclear energy to propel ships, beginning with the Nautilus in 1954, earning the moniker Father of the Atomic Submarine; he is generally credited with building up the U.S.'s nuclear fleet, hence his nickname "Father of the Nuclear Navy." TLS, 1p, 7" X 8", Washington, DC, 22 August 1961. Addressed to Howard C. Baldwin. Near fine. On letterhead of the United States Atomic Energy Commission, Rickover tells a correspondent, "Thanks for the card and for your good wishes. I appreciate your thoughtfulness in writing to me," which he signs in blue ballpoint and pens "Best regards." The occasions was likely Rickover's being awarded in 1961 the first of three Navy Distinguished Service Medals. Nice example of this uncommon autograph. With original envelope. .
