Title: It Takes All Kinds
Description: New York, Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1947. Hardcover. 8vo. Black cloth. ix, 276pp. Very good. Faint binding edgewear, else tight and internally fine; lacks dust jacket. First edition of this broad selection of the Chicago journalist's essays on a wide variety of persons and places -- including Billy the Kid, which earns the book unenthusiastic inclusion in Ramon F. Adams' "Six Guns and Saddle Leather" bibliography. From the personal collection of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. senator from Illinois -- and before him his father, Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65). On the front flyleaf, Governor Stevenson signs it in full in pencil, dating it 1949. The Stevensons were family friends with the Lewises, both living in Libertyville; the book was almost certainly given by Lewis to the not-yet governor. SIX GUNS 1327. .
