Early (not first) printing of this biography of the noted New Hampshire attorney and politician (1806-73) who served that state as Republican representative (1843-45) and senator (1855-65) and as U.S. Minister to Spain (1865-69). This copy hails from the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. senator from Illinois (1970-81) and likely his father before him, Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate -- not only that, but it bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a Letter Signed from Hale, 1p, 4 5/8" X 7 3/8", Washington, DC, 19 March 1856. Addressed to J.W. Cromwell. Very good. Minor folds. Cordially sends his signature to an admirer, beneath which is a bright red 1" wax seal bearing Hale's ornate "JPH" impress within a decorative border. Tipped to facing page is a fine 7 3/4" X 5¼" steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Hale. A striking pair in a copy with interesting provenance. .
