SCOTT, Walter - Kenilworth

Title: Kenilworth
Description: New York, The Limited Editions Club, 1966. Hardcover. Introduction by David Daiches. Illustrations by Clarke Hutton. Small 4to. Thick full gold brocade and gilt-lettered burgundy calf spine label, slipcase. xxiv, 542pp. Full-page color plates. Fine/near fine. One of the handsomest of the great many editions of Scott's wildly popular historical romance set in the 16th century and first published in 1821, the lush LEC edition bears rear colophon noting limitation of 1500 numbered copies (this #241) signed boldly by illustrator Hutton. Surprisingly, no film versions of this resulted, but the BBC released television miniseries in 1957 and again in 1967 and this unique extra-illustrated copy features on front flyleaf autograph additions from three of the stars from those adaptations, each on fine, matching, heavy stock 5" X 3" cards. Top to bottom: PAUL EDDINGTON (1927-95, plays lead Edmund Tressilian in 1957 version) signs boldly in black ballpoint, dating it 14 February 1982 at upper right; below this is DAVID LANGTON (1912-94, plays Earl of Sussex in 1967 version) signs boldly in blue ballpoint, dating it 19 July 1979 at upper right; and below this is NIGEL TERRY (1945-2015, plays Walter Raleigh in 1967 version) signs boldly in black fineline, dating it 10 August 1981 at upper right. All three original signature transmittal envelopes are laid in, as is the LEC "Monthly Letter." NEWMAN. 383. .
