HAWTHORNE, Nathaniel - Twice-Told Tales

Title: Twice-Told Tales
Description: New York, The Limited Editions Club, 1966. Hardcover. Introduction by Wallace Stegner. Illustrations by Valenti Angelo. Small 4to. Pale blue cloth with gilt-lettered burgundy calf spine label, slipcase. xv, 411pp. Color illustrations. Very good/very good. Book would rate fine but for a mild reddish spine staining from the burgundy label downward; slipcase shows some irregular sunning and neat archival strengthening along one seam. Tight and attractive copy of the short story collection first published in 1837 and 1842 -- this lovely edition with rear colophon noting limitation of 1500 numbered copies (this #27) signed by Illustrator Angelo. But this extra-illustrated copy bears two autograph additions in the form of signatures from two co-stars of the 1963 film version loosely based on Hawthorne's book, a cult classic horror anthology starring Vincent Price. Front flyleaf has two fine, matching, heavy stock 5" X 3" cards -- top to bottom: BEVERLY GARLAND (1926-2008, portrays Alice Pyncheon( signs huge and bold in black fineline, dating it 4 March 1993 at upper right; and BRETT HALSEY (born 1933, portrays Giovanni Guasconti) likewise signs large and bold in black fineline, dating it 2 August 1988. Ideal bookmarks: Garland and Hallsey's original transmittal envelopes are laid in. Printed at the noted Stinehour Press of Lunenberg, Vermont. NEWMAN 388. .
