STUART, Corey, and LASSIE - Forest Ranger Handbook

Title: Forest Ranger Handbook
Description: N.p. Wrather Corporation, 1967. Paperback. 16mo. Stiff glossy pictorial wrappers. 18pp. Color illustrations. Near fine. Superb first (and likely only) edition of this promotional giveaway, a tie-in to the popular "Lassie" television series (1954-73), which between 1964 and 1970 became the so-called "Ranger years" when Lassie was taken in by U.S. Forest service ranger Corey Stuart -- portrayed for most of those years (1964-68) by actor Robert Bray (1917-83). The series was often linked to the Forest Service's mascot, Smokey Bear, a beloved character popularized by artist Rudolph Wendelin (1910-2000), a Virginia artist who joined this agency in the early 1930s and helped launch the "Smokey the Bear" campaign in the late '30s -- now the longest running public service campaign in history; he sketched Smokey in literally hundreds of promotional pieces that encouraged conservation of natural resources and fire prevention. This booklet was actually Wendelin's personal copy, and is accompanied by an original color 6" X 4" snapshot showing Wendelin seated at left on a park bench in a wooded setting, Lassie at center and Bray in costume as Ranger Stuart at right. Bray holds a large color drawing just presented to him by Wendelin of Smokey Bear standing alongside Lassie. On the verso, Wendelin notes in blue ballpoint: "Ranger in 'Lassie' Program / receives SB drawing by / RW." A delightful association copy from the Smokey Bear artist's personal collection. .
