Author: HEDGE, Frederic H. (1805-90) Title: Autograph Letter Signed
Description: This Unitarian clergyman and Harvard professor helped organize the Transcendentalists along with Ralph Waldo Emerson. ALS, 1p (lettersheet), 4½" X 7", Cambridge, MA, 19 December 1885. Addressed to Edward Denham. Near fine. The professor of German explains that "The 'Universal German Library' was a magazine edited by Frederick Nicolai. It represented what in German literature is called the 'Aufklarung' that is, the period of enlightenment opposed to the old bigoted orthodoxy. It contended for Natural Religion & a rational theism." Boldly penned and signed in full in black ink. With original envelope, addressed in Hedge's hand. A lovely example. .
