Addressed to future notable Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Cryptic "I wish to express my appreciation for your note of July 20th," boldly signed in full in blue ink. Thomas (1884-1968) was known as the "Conscience of America," a Socialist reformer who helped found the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920 and ran for U.S. president no fewer than six times; his books include "The Conscientious Objector in America" (1923) and "What's the Matter with New York?" (1932). .
