Newman (1912-98) -- who is thanked in this book's acknowledgements -- and contained therein is a fine Autograph Note Signed from Safire, 1p, 5½" X 8½", Washington, DC, 23 March [1983]. On New York Times letterhead, the famed columnist and journalist (1929-2009) pens his friend in bold black fineline: "Dear Ralph / My thanks for / the Lloyd Lewis / book -- I'll / read with care. / Best / Bill. .
