Author: ELIOT, George Title: Romola
Description: New York, Grosset & Dunlap, n.y. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Green cloth with black lettering, pictorial dust jacket. vii, 550pp, (2pp ads). Frontispiece, 7 full-page illustrations. Very good/fair. Faintest of binding edgewear, with endpapers mildly age toned from jacket contact; jacket edgeworn and edge chipped (mainly along spine), but complete and overall fairly attractive. A tight, attractive photoplay edition (touts front jacket panel, "Illustrated with scenes from the Photoplay Produced by Inspiration Pictures, Inc. Charles H. Duell, Jr. President") featuring scenes from the 1924 Henry King silent film version starring the Gish sisters, Ronald Coleman and William Powell -- and fetching jacket front panel art a provocative portrait of Lillian Gish. Best of all, the front flyleaf bears a lovely autograph addition: A 2 3/4" X 2" heavy stock card is tipped in bearing a bold "In remembrance -- / Lillian Gish" in black fineline. Gish (1896-1993) was nicknamed "The First Lady of the Silent Screen" and her vast number of films ranged from silent classics such as "Birth of a Nation" (1915) to made-for-television dramas such as "The Whales of August" (1987). .
