Declines invitation to attend "the dinner party honoring Allan Nevins on Friday evening, October 13th.. I wish I could accept, for I am sure it will be a delightful occasion. Unhappily, my schedule is such that I am not free to go to Chicago that evening." Boldly signed in full in black ink. The occasion for this party was likely the publication of Nevins' 2-volume "The Emergence of Lincoln," part of his larger 8-volume "Ordeal of the Union" series. .
