Description: New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, n.y. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blue cloth. xii, 433pp. Illustrations. Very good. Faint edgewear, with spine slightly sunned. A tight and decent early (not first) edition of this writer's first book, a well-researched biography of the controversial Union commander who was also the first man to be acquitted of murder using the "temporary insanity" defense.-- with fine autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Swanberg, 1p, 8½" A 11", Newtown, CT, 1957 January 31. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Friendly note rejoining the New York Civil War Round Table, of which Gates was officer, and commenting: "I don't get into New York too often, but I'm looking forward to attending some of your 1957 meetings.. Recently I've been tied up with some chores that have kept my nose to the grindstone. I hope to get over the hump before very long." Boldly signed in full. Swanberg (1907-92) was a popular biography nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his 1961 biography of Willliam Randolph Hearst, winner of that award for his 1971 biography of Henry Luce and winner of the National Book Award for his 1977 biography of Norman Thomas.
