Title: Typed Note Signed
Description: Harry Truman's secretary of commerce (1948-53) was an Ohio lawyer and Democratic politician; FDR appointed him U.S. Ambassador to Belgium (1944-46). TNS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Cincinnati, OH, 1939 January 24. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Near fine. On "Democratic National Committee" letterhead, Sawyer -- who'd just lost the Ohio gubernatorial race -- comments to this young admirer, "I appreciate your suggestion about the future, although I am making no plans. I think for the time being the Democrats in Ohio would do well to let our political opposition have the center of the stage." Signed boldly. Accompanied by Sawyer's custom-printed Christmas card for this same period, featuring a photograph of him with his wife and four children around a fireplace, a printed message signed by him in type and bearing a facsimile signature. .
