Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Fine. On "Library of Congress" letterhead, which Basler served as long-time director of the reference department, Basler chats about a collection of E.D.E.S. Southworth documents the Library just acquired with the help of Gates. Signed in full in black ballpoint. Basler (1906-89) was a historian and editor of the 1953 9-volume "Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln. .
