FORNEY, John W. (1817-81) - Document Signed

Title: Document Signed
Description: This U.S. House and Senate official was primarily a journalist and editor for such papers as the "Philadelphia Press," "Washington Sunday Morning Chronicle," "The Progress" and others; in 1845 President Polk appointed him surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia and in 1871 President Grant appointed him collector of that same Port. Partly-printed DS, 1p, 13" X 8", Philadelphia, PA, 1848 April 6. Very good. Slightest bit of age toning and edgewear. Lined form with headline "Return of Merchandise unladen under my inspection, pursuant to Permits for that purpose, from on board the Bark Brunette McGrath Master, from Havana.." (all but the last few words here in print). Eight columns bear printed headings ("When Delivered," "Dates of Permits," "Marks," "Numbers," "Description of Packages," "Contents," "To Whom Delivered" and "Remarks"), in which penned comments note quantities of "Yellow Sugar" and "Brown Sugar." A docket at the bottom handsomely penned by inspector James Simpson certifies that this cargo has been examined, the only dutiable cargo being "one & half a barrel of Molasses one barrel of sugar one bag of coffee & one thousand segars.." At lower left, Forney signs as surveyor, noting "OS" (Office of Surveyor) beneath his cramped signature. A fun and attractive maritime piece. The "Brunette" was primarily a whaler active for quite a few years off the east coast. .
