Description: This American museum director oversaw the U.S. National Gallery of Art from 1969 to 1992 and made it the renowned institution it is today. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania on 2 August 1971 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 8-cent "John Sloan American Artist" stamp at upper right. Fine. At lower left, Sloan signs his usual small stylized signature in black fountain pen. With original envelope. Choice example of this influential figure's signature on an appropriate cover. .
