SWING, David (1830-94) - Autograph Letter Signed

Title: Autograph Letter Signed
Description: This memorable Presbyterian clergyman and educator in Chicago who was cited for some of his heretical forward-thinking beliefs in1874, was acquitted and resigned to found his own Central Church, becoming more popular thereafter and publishing several books of his views. Choice content ALS, 1p, 5" X 8", n.p. n.d. Addressed to L.U. Fleckler. Very good. Mild age toning and inoffensive abrasion near top margin. Interesting reply seemingly penned shortly after the famed trial, reading in part: "..superstition has caused more injury because it has been more universal and perpetual. Skepticism is of later times, and has not affected the masses, but superstition has had a wide sway always. Which will harm more the next hundred years I cannot state. I think skepticism will. Men will believe too little instead of too much.." Nicely penned in brown ink. .
